Unfortunately, for serious poker players, many of those subjects deserve a whole book dedicated to them. In other words, this book lacked the depth that professional poker players would look for. However, it's very hard to recommend this book to poker newbies, for reasons I'll go into shortly. I have to knock off 2 stars due to the author's writing style. I've read perhaps 4 or 5 books on poker and this one was the least accessible. In my opinion, the author just isn't very good at explaining concepts clearly. In fact, several times throughout this book, I felt as if I was being lectured by a middle class professor who enjoyed the sound of his own voice a bit too much. One of the most serious failings of this book is that it repeatedly uses poker terminology before the author has explained what it means. For people new to poker, this makes this book unnecessarily confusing and hard to follow. There are several poker books which I'd recommend ahead of this one. All of them have better example scenarios and clearer explanations. The author started with a lofty goal, but for my tastes this book just didn't hit the mark. I enjoyed the sections on the history of poker and poker in the movies, but the rest of the book left me cold.
I tend to subscribe to the more Zen like view that no decision is inherently good or bad, but what had to happen in the way it did, so that even bad decisions lead you where you are supposed to be.
